How To Care For Your Board

Proper board care will help keep your hardwood cutting/charcuterie board looking like new for years to come. Here are a few steps to make your used board look like new.

  • Start with cleaning the board, it is probably best not to use soap as it will soak into the grain of the wood, and you may have the taste of soap in your food.

Note: Wood made boards are not dishwasher safe. And it’s best if not left to soak in water as it will most likely warp or crack.

Rinse with warm water if you have a hard substance stuck on your board, you may want to use a plastic food scraper or just a plastic bristle brush.

  • Let the board dry completely overnight.

  • Once dry, rub some mineral oil on the board to make sure the complete surface is covered in mineral oil and let that soak in for about 20-30 minutes. Then wipe off excess mineral oil.

You will notice that your board is revived. It looks like new. Minus a few knife marks (if you used it as a cutting board).

  • The final step in this process is essential for applying a protective coating to your cutting board, which helps prevent liquids from being absorbed easily. This step doesn't need to be performed every time you clean your board. Instead, it's recommended to follow these steps approximately every five or six times you clean your cutting board, or when your board begins to appear noticeably dull.

Apply board butter by spreading evenly across the board. Make sure to cover all sides. Let it cure for 20-30 minutes, or even overnight. Once the board is cured, use a clean cloth or paper towel to wipe off the excess and to buff and polish the board. This will leave a smooth protective finish.

By using Tree Guy Woodworking’s own special blend of board butter, you will help preserve your board for years to come. Regular maintenance with board butter can extend the lifespan of your cutting board by protecting it from wear and tear.

You don't have to clean your board thoroughly every time you use it; sometimes a simple wipe-down will suffice. You can repeat these steps as necessary.

However, a deep cleaning may be required approximately every 5 to 6 uses. If you notice your board looking dry or the finish wearing off, it's a sign that it's time to refresh the board.

By following these steps, you can ensure that your cutting board remains in good condition and continues to serve you well. Remember that proper care will not only prolong its life but also maintain a safe and sanitary surface for food preparation.
